12 SUPERCONDUCTORS This section, on superconductors with high transition temperatures (Tcs) contains by far the largest number of items, a fact which is indicative of the tremendous amount of research going on in this field. There is, however, a noticeable trend away from accounts of new superconducting phases, which dominated the literature during 1988, towards more application-oriented items. In particular, emphasis has been placed on the processing of thin films and wires of superconductors, reflecting the current and widespread viewpoint that it is in these forms that ceramic superconductors are most likely to be commercialised in the near future.

It is currently used primarily in the refractories industry, however a substantial market probably exists for a successful advanced ceramic material based on high purity mullite. 1 POROUS MULLITE CERAMICS BY GLASS PHASE EXTRACTION Japanese scientists claim to have made a porous mullite by extracting the glassy phase from a sintered body based on natural clay. Researchers from the Ceramics Industrial Research Institute in Nagasaki Prefecture sinter a mixture of kaolinite (a clay from New Zealand) with either cobalt oxide or copper oxide.

Since the Hitachi announcement, Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp, Tokyo, has announced the synthesis of a compound that also exhibits superconductivity at a temperature of 130 K. Once again the composition contains vanadium rather than copper, the other elements present being bismuth and strontium. 27 PROCESS INCREASES RESISTANCE TO MAGNETIC FIELDS Japanese researchers claim to have devised a process for making high temperature superconductors which have a high resistance to magnetic fields.
