Alterations in the concentrations of products of glycolysis and nucleotide metabolism indicate that ischemia may play a role in the pathophysiology of hydrocephalus.

On the contrary, 12 patients with no improvement with or without shunting showed disproportionatcly widespread periventricular-reduced IMP uptake , despite low CSF pressure (Fig. 2). The present study indicates that periventricular hemodynamics may play an important role in cerebral function compromised by hydrocephalus. Reduction of CBF caused by an impairment of CSF dynamics alone is relatively mild since the pressure gradient and the tissue distortion effect only in the vicinity of the ventricle, as verified in experimental studies.
